Information for incomings - Vienna

If you have a place for Vienna, you will receive a letter from us with the most important and up-to-date information. The place where you stay, if you are picked up and/or welcomed, the social programme - all this depends on at which time of the year you are coming to Austria. So that is why you also get an e-mail with some specific information.

Most of your questions will be answered here on this page. Please read it carefully! If you still have some questions just write to IN-WIEN! Some questions also may have already been answered in our board (see third thread "Visiting Austria"). You can also use our board for getting or staying in contact with other incomings!

Public transport in Vienna

To use public transport it's best if you buy a ticket that is valid one calendar month (45 Euro). If you come earlier or leave later, take day or week tickets. (5 / 12,50 Euro). They are all valid within the borders of Vienna and the cheapest way (apart from "Schwarzfahren" - which means travelling without paying: sanction is 70 Euro). Buy them at tabac stores or at machines in the metro stations (usually they are red or orange, so it would be easier to find them). Maps are available at ticket selling points in big underground stations.

Bus or train from the airport (VIE) cost an extra fee!

Regular public transport begins at 4.30 in the morning and usually ends at about 00.15 - 00.30 in the night. At night there is a very good system of night buses with similar routes as at day time. You´ll find the maps at every night bus station. Those are marked by a big yellow N on a blue background. If you have already bought a valid ticket, this is also valid for the "nightlines".

Accomodation

Usually you are staying at the Student's Hostel "Haus Doebling" from Sunday before your clerkship starts until Saturday immediately after the clerkship ends. You don't need to take along bedlinen.

At the entrance of the Hostel you'll find detailed information on how to get to your room (there will be a big poster hanging at the entrance).

The hostel is just 15 minutes away from the hospital "Allgemeines Krankenhaus" (AKH), which is the biggest and most specialized hospital in Austria. You can reach the hospital with the Underground Image:Wien_u_pic.gif U6, station "Michelbeuern, Allgemeines Krankenhaus".

If you plan to come later – although we may be angry if you do so, because the clinics' timeschedule should also be respected – you may check in Monday to Thursday from 08.00 – 10.00 and 14.00 – 16.00. On Fridays from 08.00 – 10.00. For special arrangements please call Haus Döbling. They are willing to respect special arriving times on an individual and announced basis.

Your way to the hostel

Within the year you will be picked up by a member of the AMSA if possible, but in summer there are so many students soming to Austria that this is not possible.

We are convinced that you'll find the way. Public transport is easy to understand in Vienna! Here are four descriptions for the usual points of arravial in Austria:

a) Airport "Wien - Schwechat"

There are trains leaving every half hour.

  • The cheapest way to get to the city is to take the train Image:Wien_s_pic.gif "S2" to Landstraße/Wien Mitte.
  • The most comfortable, fastest, but a little bit more expensive way is to take the special "City Airport Train" Image:Wien_cat_pic.gif right at the airport. This is a express train pending between the airport and the center of Vienna. It takes about 15 minutes. Get off at Landstraße/Wien Mitte.
  • When you have arrived at the Station "Landstraße/Wien Mitte" you continue with the Underground lineImage:Wien_u_pic.gif U4 (the green line), direction "Heiligenstadt". Get off at Spittelau.
  • Then take Image:Wien_bus_pic.gif bus number 35A, direction "Salmannsdorf". Get off at HARDTGASSE. Maybe try to ask the busdriver to tell you when you arrive at "Hardtgasse" if you don't want to miss it. The hostel is directly across the street from the busstop!

b) Train Station "Wien Westbahnof"

Take the Underground line Image:Wien_u_pic.gif U6 (the brown line), direction "Floridsdorf". Get off at Nussdorfer Straße and take the tram Image:Wien_str_pic.gif 38 direction "Grinzing" to Hardtgasse (two stops away from Nußdorfer Straße), where you get off directly in front of the hostel.

c) Train Station "Wien Südbahnhof"

Take the tram Image:Wien_str_pic.gif 6 or 18, direction "Burggasse - Stadthalle" and get off at Wien Westbahnhof. See above for the rest.

d) From elsewhere

If you come from elsewhere, find the Image:Wien_u_pic.gif U6 or U4 and follow the description above.

Hospital

You will be working at the AKH (see www.akhwien.at), which has it's own Underground Station Image:Wien_u_pic.gif U6 Michelbeuern/Allgemeines Krankenhaus. You'll start working every day at approximately 8:00 am and finish at 1:00 pm. Don't take along white clothing for you'll receive them here at the Hospital. Nevertheless it is advisable to bring your own stethoscope, lamp and tourniquet, as well as a pair of preferably white shoes for the hospital. You'll also receive the lunch at the local cafeteria. Every doctor at the local hospital is able to speak English fluently and you won't have to prepare anything for working here.

Social program

We try to organize you some social program, you'll get up-to-date information upon your arrival.
